Rockstar Games has announced the acquisition of Sydney-based development studio Video Games Deluxe, further strengthening its global production network. The studio, which has collaborated with Rockstar on various projects, will now be rebranded as Rockstar Australia.
Video Games Deluxe has played a crucial role in Rockstar’s recent releases, including the 2017 re-releases of L.A. Noire, L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files, and updates to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition across multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, and Netflix. The acquisition formalizes a relationship spanning over a decade, dating back to the days of Team Bondi, a studio led by Video Games Deluxe founder Brendan McNamara. Team Bondi was responsible for developing L.A. Noire, a game that had a significant impact on narrative-driven gaming.
Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar Games’ Head of Publishing, highlighted the strong working relationship between the two companies. “After years of collaboration, we are excited to welcome Video Games Deluxe as Rockstar Australia,” Kolbe said.
McNamara also expressed enthusiasm for the transition. “It has been an incredible journey working alongside Rockstar Games. Becoming part of Rockstar officially marks a new chapter in our dedication to delivering top-tier gaming experiences.”
Industry analysts anticipate that Video Games Deluxe will serve as a support studio for major upcoming projects, including Grand Theft Auto VI. The highly anticipated title is set for release in fall 2025, though a launch before September 23 appears unlikely. Parent company Take-Two Interactive is scheduled to release Borderlands 4 on that date and may avoid launching two major franchises simultaneously.
Rockstar has not yet provided details on the second trailer for GTA VI, which remains in development for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. A PC version is expected to follow at a later stage.
